South Indian Cinema is used to refer collectively to the four distinct film industries of Tollywood (Telugu), Kollywood (Tamil), Mollywood (Malayalam), and Sandalwood (Kannada), as a single entity.[1] The following is a list of the highest-grossing South Indian films, based on the conservative box office estimates as reported by industry sources. However, there is no official tracking of figures, and sources publishing data are frequently pressured to increase their estimates.[2]

The combined industries' revenue represent 50% of Indian cinema,[3] in which Tollywood and Kollywood represent 19% and 17% of the Indian box office.[4]

Overview[edit]

South Indian cinema has always produced their films cost effectively.[citation needed] However, in recent times, it has produced many of the most expensive films in Indian cinema, such as: 2.0, Enthiran, Bahubali, etc.[5] The South Indian cinema box office's growth rate has surpassed that of Hindi cinema.[citation needed]

The first South Indian film to gross over 100 crore worldwide was the 2007 Tamil film Sivaji, which starred Rajinikanth and Shriya Saran in lead roles.[6] While, the first South Indian film as well as the first Indian film to gross over ₹1000 crore worldwide was the 2017 Telugu Film Baahubali 2: The Conclusion directed by S. S. Rajamouli,[7][8][9] which starred Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty, Tamannaah, Ramya Krishna and Subbaraju in lead roles. The highest-grossing film in India is Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), with a total domestic gross of ₹1,429.83 crore.[10][11]
