- In a mass shooting in Seoul, South Korea, an intoxicated paratrooper killed nine people with a carbine and then committed suicide.[8]
- 68-year-old American actor Henry Fonda had a pacemaker implanted at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, New York City.[9]
- The Maryland Court of Appeals disbarred Spiro Agnew, the former Vice President of the United States, who had pled no contest to a charge of tax evasion in October 1973 on the same day he resigned the Vice Presidency.[10]
- Approximately 3,600 bus drivers and other transit employees went on strike in Washington, D.C., completely shutting down bus service in the capital of the United States.[11]
- 22 people died in the crash of an Atesa DC-3 in the Andes east of Quito, Ecuador.[12]
- The Troubles: The Ulster Volunteer Force carried out the Rose & Crown Bar bombing in Belfast, killing six people and injuring 18.[13][14]

- The Troubles: The Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) carried out the Dublin and Monaghan bombings, exploding four car bombs in counties Dublin and Monaghan in the Republic of Ireland. The attacks killed 33 civilians and an unborn child and wounded almost 300, the highest number of casualties in any single event during the conflict.[54]
- In Compton, California, a shootout between members of the Los Angeles Police Department and the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) led to a fire started by tear gas containers. Six SLA members died during the incident. Patty Hearst, whom the SLA had kidnapped in February, was not present at the shootout.[55][56][57]
