Nupa Maibi

From Bharatpedia, an open encyclopedia

A Nupa Maibi or a Nupa Amaibi (literally, "male priestess"[1]) is a male transgender priest in Sanamahism (Meitei religion).[2] They are called "male priestess" as they hold the roles of the maibis in the religious rites and rituals, though they are biologically male. They are said to be possessed by the spirits of Lairembis (female deities).[3] They have crucial roles to play in the sacred Lai Haraoba festival.
